Hampton-in-Arden mixed team – 7
Burton mixed team – 6
Hampton-in-Arden mixed team came out on top of a 13-goal thriller in the second round of the England Hockey National Trophy on Sunday.
Hampton never went behind in a topsy-turvy game, but twice gave up two-goal leads to a strong Burton side.
Youngster Grace Jeynes opened the scoring, with a stylish spin around the keeper but Burton soon drew level. Hampton again took the lead, captain Matt Hall finishing off a smart attacking move and then Dafydd Bowles added to the team’s tally with a thumping penalty corner shot. Hampton allowed Burton back into the game, but always looked capable of scoring more, moving the ball confidently around the pitch and working closely together as a team. The scores to’d and fro-d some more, Chris Popplewell and Bowles adding goals to the scoresheet but then Burton came back again to make the full-time score five-all.
Extra time followed, and Hampton took the lead, Bowles completing his hattrick with another of his trademark drag flicks. But yet again Burton came back at Hampton and scored a goal of their own, sending the teams into the second half still level. As the tension mounted, Hampton looked more like picking up the winner and so it was to be just a few minutes from time as Bowles surged forward, dribbling round several Burton players, setting up Matt Hall to tap in and give Hampton the victory.
