Bad Weather Arrangements

With the bad weather cancelling all our games last week, it would seem sensible to mention what people should look for in cases of bad weather:

Matches: In all cases, it is the responsibility of each captain to communicate with their teams where matches are cancelled.

Training: Check the website to see if there are any announcements about training being cancelled - this may not happen until the last minute!

KJ Memorial Tournament

The day started in bright sunshine with an estimated 40 expected to play. We eventually "registered" enough for 8 teams of between 9 and 10 per team! The youngest being Rob Clift's (our Olympians Medalist) son under 10 to the oldest over 60 (who will remain nameless but it wasn't me!)

Thanks to Cindy and her team of ladies who served tea and cakes all afternoon followed by an exceptional Steve Bradley BBQ. The sun shone on us all afternoon (thank you Karen mate, looking after me as usual!) and in the middle of the afternoon Karen's Dad - Graham - formally handed the "Karen Juniper Memorial Dugout" over to us. The dugout has been bought for us by Graham and the Recreational Trust, so many many thanks. A special "thank you" to Graham Holwell and his team for putting it up as it arrived in flat pack form!

Karen was a prolific "Sniffer" of goals so the "Hamtonians touch me for luck" is to help her prowess rub off on the rest of us and speed us to glory in our matches.

Another person who made the day run so well is Sally Brown who ran the Tournament and Teresa and her team of umpires. Also thanks to Steve and Bouncer for a brilliant end to the day with your band (even I stayed up past my bedtime!).

Thank you to all who gave such generous prizes for the raffle and it was so good to see so many ex members again including Sally Walton -and her Mum in kit again!, Rob Clift, Caroline Spellman (taking a day off from Cabinet duties, I hope Mr Cameron gave his permission) Julie and Graham Parry, Peter Juniper and his wife Tash, Ali Baba, Georgie, Chris and Jack Duerdon, Bully - to name but a few.

We raised £1391 in total - ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. WELL DONE EVERYONE WHO TOOK PART - we must do it again! Karen would have been so chuffed and I feel so proud to be a HAMPTONITE

Lis has the legs for Paris pedal

Hampton-in-Arden hockey club umpire Lis Hedley showed tremendous pedal power last month when she pedalled her way to Paris from Solihull.

Lis rode over 330 miles in 4 days as part of a group of riders raising money to help build a new Marie Curie hospice for the West Midlands. The group has already raised tens of thousands of pounds with its cycling challenge. This will go towards the Big Build Appeal, which is aiming to raise £7million in total.

Lis (pictured at the end of her ride by the Eiffel Tower) said: “Arriving in Paris was fantastic, the atmosphere was brilliant and we all had a tremendous feeling of achievement. The ride itself was very hard work but very worthwhile.”

Fundraising for the hospice appeal continues, and Lis herself has already raised nearly £2000. If you would like to donate please visit http://original.justgiving.com/elisabethhedley.

How mo can you go?

Support our men's 1st team as they become hairier!!!

Our gallant 1st team men, some more blessed with facial hair growing abilities than others, are fundraising and mo-growing for Movember.

Just in case you've never heard of it, Movember is a month-long charity activity, the aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other cancers that affect men.

And to raise these funds, men all over the world grow (or try to grow!) the finest moustaches they can muster. On 1stNovember, sorry Movember, our men, or ‘Mo Bros’ say goodbye to their clean-shaven top lips and start to grow and groom their way to moustache mastery.

As the organisers of Movember say: “Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.”

The funds raised in the UK support the number one and two male specific cancers - prostate and testicular cancer. The funds raised are directed to programmes run directly by Movember and our men’s health partners, The Prostate Cancer Charity and the Institute of Cancer Research.

Hampton1st team men’s captain, Scott Powell, is right behind the cause: “It’s really important that we raise funds to support such crucial work. It’s also a great way for the team to have some fun, and we will be competing to see who can cultivate the biggest and most stylish moustaches!”

You can donate to the team through the Movember website.

Mo-mentous month for our Men's 1st team

Congratulations to our fan-tache-tic men’s 1st team who raised almost £1500 for charity during last month.

The men (pictured below) had a month to flaunt their lip fuzz, all for the sake of raising money for prostate cancer awareness as part of Movember.

Special congratulations must go to Clive who raised £800 and Olly who raised £200. Credit also goes to Clive and Scott for cultivating some seriously retro style ‘nose neighbours’ (with thanks to Ned Flanders for that one).

Congratulations also to those who were willing to hang on a few extra days for a team photo with their bristles on show. For those who either didn’t have the growing power, or those who got rid of them, you’ll find our friendly photo editor has photoshopped some in for you!!

Mixed team progress in National Trophy

Hampton-in-Arden mixed team - 7
Burton mixed team - 6

Hampton-in-Arden mixed team came out on top of a 13-goal thriller in the second round of the England Hockey National Trophy on Sunday.

Hampton never went behind in a topsy-turvy game, but twice gave up two-goal leads to a strong Burton side.

Youngster Grace Jeynes opened the scoring, with a stylish spin around the keeper but Burton soon drew level. Hampton again took the lead, captain Matt Hall finishing off a smart attacking move and then Dafydd Bowles added to the team’s tally with a thumping penalty corner shot. Hampton allowed Burton back into the game, but always looked capable of scoring more, moving the ball confidently around the pitch and working closely together as a team. The scores to’d and fro-d some more, Chris Popplewell and Bowles adding goals to the scoresheet but then Burton came back again to make the full-time score five-all.

Extra time followed, and Hampton took the lead, Bowles completing his hattrick with another of his trademark drag flicks. But yet again Burton came back at Hampton and scored a goal of their own, sending the teams into the second half still level. As the tension mounted, Hampton looked more like picking up the winner and so it was to be just a few minutes from time as Bowles surged forward, dribbling round several Burton players, setting up Matt Hall to tap in and give Hampton the victory.

TEAM: Matt Hall, Grace Jeynes, Dafydd Bowles, Chris Popplewell, Lauren Boon, Helen Barratt. Rhys Doherty, Sam Powell, Maria Barnes, Calam Bruce, Mill Cauthery, Olly Manning. With thanks to Stuart Bradley for umpiring.

Mixed march on

Hampton-in-Arden Mixed team - 4
Streetley Mixed team - 3

Hampton-in-Arden mixed team progressed into the final sixteen of the England Hockey National Mixed Trophy competition with a closely fought 4-3 victory over Streetley.

Vicky Woolford opened the scoring for Hampton with a precision shot but Streetley soon got back on an equal footing as they found the goal themselves. The rest of the first half was goalless, despite numerous efforts on goal from both sides, with neither team able to gain the upper hand.

The see-saw nature of the game continued in the second half, but as the game progressed both defences had lapses allowing the scoreline to creep up. Hampton took the lead again, Dafydd Bowles scoring a drag flick from a sharp penalty corner routine, but Streetley pulled level, in an emerging pattern for the game. For the third time Hampton took the lead, Bowles collecting his second with a well-taken penalty flick, earned by Chris Popplewell who was fouled when appearing to be clear through on goal. But again, Hampton allowed Streetley to equalise and it led to a tense final fifteen minutes as both sides pushed to find the all important winning goal.

Hampton's attacking efforts were rewarded though as Woolford collected her second, and Hampton's fourth, after a slickly delivered penalty corner routine. It was then critical that Hampton kept their defence tight and they did so, frustrating the Streetley attacks and gaining themselves a well-earned victory.

The next round of the cup will be played on April 15th (the day after our end-of-season dinner) against local rivals Olton.

End of the line for our mixed team

Hampton's mixed team took on Olton in the last 16 round of the National Mixed Trophy this Sunday. In what was always going to be a tough match, Hampton put on a good showing, despite many of the team nursing hangovers having attended the club dinner the night before!

Hampton played some good looking hockey throughout the game, with strong tackling and some skillful phases of passing, but unfortunately the team were not consistent enough for their attacks to bear any fruit. Olton took the lead after about ten minutes, but never looked truly comfortable and certainly did not dominate. Indeed Hampton continued to push and despite going further goals behind, made a breakthrough thanks to Vicky Woolford.

The second half saw Olton pick up a couple more goals early on. Hampton did not give up and carried on playing with intent and with skill - at times they played the better, more creative hockey, but Olton were more ruthless, picking up on errors and making Hampton pay.

Dafydd Bowles scored Hampton's second goal, but it was only a small consolation as the team went out of the cup 7-2.

Hampton can be very proud of a fine run in the Trophy this year with what is on the whole a young team.

Photos of the match are in the photo gallery.
